Our mission

Out-of-the-boat provides resources to serve the neighbor and the common good – in the public square through the theological lens of the gospels – not to convert but to serve.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer compels we who claim to follow Christ to obey the call of Jesus to get out of the comfort of the boat and join him in the stormy waters of the world. We cannot love and serve the neighbor while remaining safe behind church walls, political ideologies and a “me and Jesus” limit to our faith. Jesus is already in the public square and calls us to join him there to be his hands, feet and voice. Public theology addresses policy, politics, problems and people not to convert but to love. Sometimes the waters may be rough, but we follow where Christ leads. But be warned, if we follow a crucified Christ, we end up on the cross. Bonhoeffer reminds us in The Cost of Discipleship that, “When Christ calls a [person], he bids us come and die.”
